black history

Sojourner truth was born a slave in New York. Her real name is Isabella Baumfree. She was supposed to be granted her freedom in 1827. When she realized her slave owner was planning to keep her enslaved she decided to run away. So she took her youngest child with her and she followed the North Star to lead them to a place.

When she got there she decided to go back and gather family, friends, and strangers to lead them also to a safe place. She also was the first black women to file a court case in America and even though it seemed nearly impossible, she won and got her son back. She was a super hero!

In 1843, she changed her name to Sojourner (which means traveler) and became a preacher. She traveled the country sharing her messages for women's rights and the abolition of slavery everywhere. Although Sojourner could neither read nor write, her voice carried everywhere she went.

In December 1851, she gave an amazing speech that she made up on the spot. In it she advocated on behalf of all the black woman who faced the double discrimination of racism and sexism plus those who had been left left out of the fight for equality. That was the speech that Sojourner said, "was ain’t I a woman!"

I think that Sojourner is an amazing black woman who gave an incredible speech that change African Americans life. I for one admire her work and all of her achievements and wish I could have met her back then. I love her speech and her fire that inspired her to go back and get her family, friends and even strangers. I wonder if she was scared of getting caught and never escaping again?

We all can learn to be brave from her story and write our own custom stories regardless of the circumstance. Happy Women's History Month!
